嚴明惠 YAN Ming-Hui（1956-2018）

八十年代以女性主體受到壓抑為創作主題的女性主義畫家嚴明惠，自國立台灣師範大學美術系畢業後，赴美國紐約留學。

1987年獲紐約州立大學藝術碩士，兩年後返回台灣。當時創作以顛覆男性為尊，受壓抑的女權意識為表現主題，在畫壇頗享聲譽。

In the 1980s, feminist painter YAN Ming-Hui developed a body of work centered on the suppression of female subjectivity. After graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, she pursued advanced studies in New York, United States.

In 1987, she received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York, and returned to Taiwan two years later. During this period, her artistic practice was characterized by a critical interrogation of patriarchal dominance and an exploration of repressed feminist consciousness, earning her significant recognition within the contemporary art scene.

嚴明惠自2000年起專注學佛，創作也隨之轉移為佛教主題，以油畫、瓷刻表現她對佛法的敬重、仰慕、追求。她常以菩薩形象、佛手、拈花微笑的瓷刻來禮讚佛、菩薩累生累世對人類的貢獻。

Beginning in 2000, YAN Ming-Hui devoted herself to the study and practice of Buddhism, and her artistic focus subsequently shifted toward Buddhist themes. Working primarily in oil painting and porcelain carving, she sought to express her reverence for, admiration of, and spiritual pursuit of Buddhist teachings. Her works frequently depict Bodhisattva figures, the hand of the Buddha, and porcelain carvings inspired by the motif of the Buddha’s “flower-twirling smile,” serving as visual tributes to the enduring contributions of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to humanity across countless lifetimes.
