嚴明惠簡歷
八十年代以女性主體受到壓抑為創作主題的女性主義畫家嚴明惠,自國立臺灣師範大學美術系畢業後,赴美國紐約留學。1987年獲紐約州立大學藝術碩士,兩年後返回臺灣。當時創作以顛覆男性為尊,受壓抑的女權意識為表現主題,在畫壇頗享聲譽。
此間參加前衛藝術團體「2號公寓」,和許多留學返臺的年輕藝術家推動前衛藝術,參與許多前衛藝術畫廊的聯展,1992年受邀於臺北市立美術館之雙年展聯展,兩年後在臺北市立美術館以《空花系列》舉行個展,此系列作品並為臺北市立美術館及國立臺灣美術館典藏。
自美國返臺後,嚴明惠即陸續任教於臺灣多所專科學校、科技大學。2000年時除任教萬能科技大學副教授外,因專心學佛,創作也隨之轉移為佛教主題,以油畫、瓷刻來表現她對佛法的敬重、仰慕、追求。她常以菩薩形象、佛手、拈花微笑的瓷刻來禮讚佛、菩薩累生累世對人類的貢獻。
In the 1980s, feminist painter YAN Ming-Hui developed a body of work centered on the suppression of female subjectivity. After graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, she pursued further studies in New York, United States. In 1987, she obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York, and returned to Taiwan two years later. During this period, her artistic practice critically engaged with patriarchal dominance, foregrounding repressed feminist consciousness as a central theme; her work garnered considerable recognition within the art world.
During this time, she participated in the avant-garde art collective “Apartment No. 2,” collaborating with a number of young artists who had also returned to Taiwan after studying abroad to promote experimental and avant-garde practices. She took part in numerous group exhibitions at progressive galleries, and in 1992 was invited to exhibit in the Taipei Biennial at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Two years later, she held a solo exhibition at the same institution, presenting her “Ephemeral Flowers” series. Works from this series have since been acquired by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts for their permanent collections.
Following her return from the United States, YAN Ming-Hui also held teaching positions at several junior colleges and universities of science and technology in Taiwan. By 2000, while serving as an associate professor at Vanung University, she began to devote herself to the study and practice of Buddhism. Her artistic focus subsequently shifted toward Buddhist themes, expressed through oil painting and porcelain carving, as a means of articulating her reverence for, admiration of, and spiritual pursuit of Buddhist teachings. Her works frequently feature Bodhisattva imagery, the hand of the Buddha, and porcelain carvings inspired by the motif of the Buddha’s “flower-twirling smile,” serving as tributes to the enduring contributions of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to humanity across countless lifetimes.
