趙無極 ZAO Wou-Ki（1921-2013）

與吳冠中、朱德群並稱中國藝術界「留法三劍客」的趙無極，1921年出生於北京書香世家，從小便對藝術充滿熱情。1935年趙無極通過考試進入國立杭州藝術專科學校（簡稱杭州藝專）就讀，師從吳大羽、方幹民、林風眠等。1941年趙無極畢業，經林風眠推薦留校任教，五年後移居巴黎，開啟全職藝家的道路。巴黎灌溉著趙無極的靈感，他非常崇拜馬蒂斯（Matisse）和畢卡索（Picasso），西方現代主義、印象派及表現主義也一直影響著他的創作。

ZAO Wou-Ki, born in 1921 in Beijing into a scholarly family, showed a strong passion for art from a young age. In 1935, he enrolled at the Hangzhou National College of Art, studying under renowned artists such as LIN Feng-Mian and WU Da-Yu. After graduating in 1941, he remained at the school as a teacher. In 1946, he moved to Paris to pursue his artistic career, where he was deeply influenced by Western modern art, including artists like Matisse and Picasso, as well as Impressionism and Expressionism.

大道無極 The Way Is Infinite

「無極」一詞指沒有界限，預示趙無極的多種創作風格如油畫、水墨畫、平版印刷、雕刻和水彩，他同時擁抱不同文化身份而且從不受約束。隨著到世界各地的遊歷，趙無極的藝術疆域也不斷地擴展，他將西方的抽象繪畫方法和中國畫寫意畫法的空靈意象融合到一起。而法國五月沙龍、義大利威尼斯雙年展等展覽的參與，也讓趙無極在西方世界備受矚目。1993年，趙無極獲法國密特朗總統頒贈榮譽勳位，並獲巴黎市長希哈克親頒巴黎市政府維爾美勳章。1995年，獲日本皇室大賞。2002年，趙無極被選為法蘭西藝術院院士，並授予榮譽勳章，實為華人藝術界的驕傲。

The term "Wuji" signifies boundlessness, reflecting ZAO Wou-Ki's diverse artistic styles in oil painting, ink painting, printmaking, sculpture, and watercolor. He embraced different cultural identities and remained unrestricted in his artistic expression. As he traveled around the world, ZAO Wou-Ki's artistic territory expanded, blending Western abstract painting techniques with the ethereal imagery of Chinese ink painting. His participation in exhibitions such as the May Salon in France and the Venice Biennale in Italy garnered significant attention in the Western art world. In 1993, ZAO Wou-Ki was awarded the Legion of Honor by the President of France and received the Medal of the City of Paris from the Mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac. In 1995, he was honored with the Imperial Prize in Japan. In 2002, ZAO Wou-Ki was elected as an Academician of the French Academy of Fine Arts and was bestowed the honorary title and medal, which is a source of pride for the Chinese art community.

1948　離開上海赴法留學。
1949　法國巴黎約克勒茲畫廊舉辦留法後首次個展，出版《趙無極八幅石版畫欣賞》專輯。
1953　辛辛那提博物館舉辦趙無極版畫回顧展。
1969　第二次回顧展先後在加拿大蒙特利爾當代美術館和魁北克博物館舉行。
1981　法國巴黎大皇宮國家美術館個展。
1982　個展於日本東京日本橋藝術畫廊、國立京都美術館、香港藝術中心、新加坡現代美術館。
1983　個展於臺灣國立歷史博物館、臺南文化中心；法國蒙蒙托邦安格爾美術館舉行回顧展。
　中國文化部邀請回國於北京故宮博物館及浙江杭州藝專舉行個展。
1984　獲法國文化部長雅克・朗提名，授予法國榮譽軍團頒授軍官勳章。
1993　法國密特朗總統提名晉升為法國榮譽軍團高等騎士。
　獲香港中文大學榮譽博士學位。
1994　獲日本皇家頒發高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞（繪畫）。
1995　獲LVMH集團科學藝術獎中的藝術獎。

1998　上海博物館以其三個特別展覽廳舉辦趙無極回顧展；上海霍克藝術會館舉辦趙無極版畫展。

2013　因病辭世，享壽93歲。
2017　臺中亞洲大學現代美術館舉辦《無極之美：趙無極回顧展》。
