江明賢出生於臺中，早年畢業於臺灣師大美術系，留學西班牙並旅居紐約多年。曾任臺師大美術系暨美術研究所教授、系主任、所長。民國77年獲「國家文藝獎」。其作品在海內外舉辦過60餘次個展，參加過百餘次重要海內外聯展。

江明賢醉心於歷史人文景觀，五十年來踏遍世界各地，人類學式的用毛筆採集被聯合國教科文組織(UNESCO)列入人類文化與自然遺產，甚具人文特色之自然美景、風土民俗、古跡建築物。江明賢以高難度之水墨筆意，將氣勢雄偉，壯麗典雅的「哥德式」與「巴羅克」風格之布拉格、布達佩斯、德勒斯登等古城一一轉化、再現，令人印象深刻。其他甚具在地風格之大甲鎮瀾宮、險峻之蘇花斷崖、燕子長春及峭壁淩空之長江三峽、武夷山勝覽，神秘香格里拉、麗江古鎮、美麗的婺源與周莊、烏鎮等大好河山，亦盡入畫中。

江明賢教授自臺師大退休後，全力投人創作，並致力於兩岸文化藝術交流之推動。 2011年應聘擔任中國國家畫院院委暨研究員。2012年北京人民美術出版社出版了「中國近現代名家畫集─江明賢」，是繼渡海三家溥心畬、張大千、黃君璧外，首次出版臺灣具有成就畫家之「大紅袍」作品集，也是中國美術界對他藝術成就的肯定。

CHIANG Ming-Shyan was born in Taichung. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, later studied in Spain, and lived in New York for many years. He served as Professor, Chair, and Director of the Department of Fine Arts and the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. In 1988, he received the National Award for Arts. His works have been presented in more than 60 solo exhibitions and over 100 major group exhibitions in Taiwan and internationally.

CHIANG Ming-Shyan is devoted to historical and cultural landscapes. Over the past five decades, he has traveled extensively, adopting an anthropological approach to record—through ink brushwork—culturally significant natural scenery, local customs, and historic architecture, many of which are recognized as UNESCO cultural and natural heritage. With highly accomplished and technically demanding brushwork, he transforms and reinterprets the grandeur and elegance of Gothic and Baroque architecture, particularly in historic cities such as Prague, Budapest, and Dresden. He also depicts subjects rich in local character, including temples, dramatic cliffs, and renowned landscapes such as the Yangtze Three Gorges, Mount Wuyi, Shangri-La, Lijiang Old Town, Wuyuan, Zhouzhuang, and Wuzhen, capturing the beauty of diverse regions within his paintings.

After retiring from National Taiwan Normal University, Professor CHIANG Ming-Shyan devoted himself fully to artistic creation and actively promoted cross-strait cultural exchange. In 2011, he was appointed as a member and researcher at the China National Academy of Painting. In 2012, People’s Fine Arts Publishing House in Beijing published Collected Paintings of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Masters: CHIANG Ming-Shyan. Following PU Hsin-Yu, CHANG Dai-Chien, and HUANG Chun-Pi, he became the first accomplished Taiwanese artist to be included in this prestigious “Red Robe” series, marking significant recognition of his artistic achievements in the Chinese art world.

上海、杭州、南京、廣州、澳門等地舉行個展六十餘次，重要國內外聯展達百餘次。
2005　中國文化部策劃「臺灣巨匠系列」邀請，在北京中國美術館、上海美術館、廣東美術館舉行巡迴個展。
2005　於北京中國美術館舉行「江明賢作品學術研討會」，
並於臺灣、日本、中國、美國、法國等地之專家學者提出論文參予研討。
2011　應大陸國務院參事室邀請與著名畫家宋雨桂擔任兩岸主筆合繪「新富春山居圖」長卷。
2012 《中國近現代名家畫集－江明賢》(大紅袍) 北京人民美術出版社出版。
2015　中國國家博物館舉行《江明賢作品學術研討會》。
2015　浙江美術館舉行《江明賢作品學術研討會》。
2015 《水墨長河－江明賢創作大展》個展於國父紀念館。
2017 《歷史、人文、美學－江明賢的墨彩世界》個展於國立歷史博物館。
2019 《雲月八千里－江明賢彩墨巡迴展》，
巡迴北京中國美術館、江蘇省美術館、成都杜甫草堂博物館及首爾中國文化中心展出。
2023 《大道無門－江明賢藝術歷程》個展於國立臺灣美術館。
榮獲首屆「世界華人美術金筆獎」
