謂為開創當代水墨新格局先驅的吳學讓，承教於藝術大師搖籃之稱的杭州藝專。其精湛的水墨變化萬千、創作風格無所不精，工筆蟲鳥細膩生動，設色山水筆力萬鈞，而寫意花卉娟秀典雅，帶著晚清海派的筆韻。70年代，吳學讓大膽變革，以幾何形體勾勒鳥禽，將社會與家庭的和諧關係，精妙佈局於紙上，「童真質樸」自此成為藝術家鮮明的個人特色。至晚年，將書法特有的線性表現，架接起抽象藝術的橋樑，千年的東方文化淵源，在吳學讓的筆墨之間，昇華為跨國界美學藩籬的藝術典範。

Wu Hsueh-Jang, a pioneer of the new pattern of contemporary ink paintings, was taught at the Hangzhou National Academy of Fine Arts. His superb ink paintings are changing, and his creative style is omnipresent. He draws insects and birds delicately and vividly, and he fills in colors of mountanins and waters powerfully, and freehand flowers are elegant, with the rhyme of the late Qing Dynasty. In the 1970s, Wu Hsueh-Jang adopted bold changes, outlined birds with geometric shapes, and laid out the harmonious relationship between society and family in the drawing. "Childlike simplicity" has thence become a distinct personal characteristic of the artist. In his later years, he combined the unique linear expression of calligraphy with the technique of abstract art. The cultural origin of the Chinese nation for thousands of years has elevated into an artistic model that transcends national aesthetics in Wu's efforts.

故國神遊　水墨新象 Reverie of the Homeland, New Visions in Ink

現代水墨先驅吳學讓，別號退伯，1923年出生於四川，杭州藝專傳人，師承林風眠、潘天壽、李可染等名家，與趙無極、朱德群同為杭州藝專傑出校友，為教育奉獻50年，是臺灣美學教育的導師。 2013年4月7日逝世於洛杉磯家中。

WU Hsueh-Jang, a pioneer of modern ink painting, also styled himself as Tui Po, was born in Sichuan in 1923. As an heir to the Hangzhou National College of Art, he studied under LIN Feng-Mian, PAN Tian-Shou, and LEE Ke-Ran, and was a distinguished alumnus alongside ZAO Wou-Ki and CHU Teh-Chun.

He devoted fifty years to art education and became a mentor of aesthetic education in Taiwan. He passed away at his home in Los Angeles on April 7, 2013.

1956　任教於臺灣省立臺北女子師範學院。
1959　獲十四屆全省美展國畫部第一獎、第八屆全省教員美展國畫部第一獎。
1970　於臺北藝術家畫廊舉行臺灣首次個展。
1978　任中國文化大學美術系專任教授。
1981　參加法國國立塞紐斯基博物館舉辦之《中國現代繪畫趨向展》。
1984　獲中華民國畫學會繪畫教育《金爵獎》。
1985　獲中國文藝協會國畫繪畫金質獎章。
1988　專任教授於東海大學美術系。
1992　臺灣省立美術館、上海美術館海峽兩岸《當代水墨繪畫聯展》。
1994　應邀於臺北市立美術館舉辦《吳學讓七十回顧展》。
1996　應邀於臺灣省立美術館舉辦《從傳統到現代-吳學讓彩墨畫展》個展。
1997　定居美國洛杉磯。
2004　《故國神遊－吳學讓八十回顧展》於臺北國立歷史博物館，作品由該館永久珍藏。
2012　《杭州藝專三傑－吳學讓、朱德群、趙無極聯展》，名山藝術，臺北，臺灣。
2013　逝於美國洛杉磯，享年90歲。
2017　大型回顧展《線性．符號．東方幾何－吳學讓藝術特展》，國立臺灣美術館，臺中，臺灣。
2023　《萬世千秋：吳學讓百歲誕辰紀念展》，名山藝術，臺北，臺灣。
2026　《山外山：當代水墨的重構與新章》，名山藝術，臺北，臺灣。
